Movember (combining “moustache” and “November”) is an annual event put on by an Australian foundation to raise awareness about men’s health issues such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Started in 2004 in Melbourne, the event quickly gained popularity and by 2007 official Movember events took place in Ireland, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Spain, the United Kingdom, Israel, South Africa, Taiwan, and the United States.
During the 2015 Movember campaign, Tecnilógica decided to get involved, and we launched the #MoBoxing event in collaboration with the Fightland boxing center in Madrid. With the motto “boxing against cancer”, every hit on the punching bag generated donations by both companies to the Movember Foundation.
The fun part was measuring the strength of each punch, which determined the amount of money donated to the cause by Tecnilógica and Fightland. First we added a wristband to the boxing gloves with a custom-made Arduino circuit; this circuit combined an accelerometer to measure the speed of the punch, and a microcontroller that filtered data to accurately detect the punches.
Then we developed an iPad app to receive and display the information.
After each punch, the circuit sent the results by Bluetooth to the iPad, which displayed the force of the punch and the corresponding amount of money to be donated.
